They are so cool! I met the legendary Hip Hop artist, Slick Rick "the Ruler", completely by chance. I happened to be shooting a concert performance at Wolf Creek Amphitheater. I was there shooting Mint Condition during sound check. I was wearing my Louisville Cardinal gear, which is normal for me because I truly love the University of Louisville Cardinals.
On this particular day, while I was waiting for Mint Condition to come out to rehearse I was watching Slick Rick's people set up for the sound check when I heard a loud voice ask "What do you know about those Cardinals?"
I smiled and answered, "Everything, that's my hometown!” That voice was the voice of Rick's world-class DJ, DJ KAOS. KAOS was curious about my affiliation because he is also from Louisville. The fact is that DJ KAOS still lives in Louisville. DJ KAOS is very protective about who reps our city, and so am I.
We became brothers very quickly and after showing him some of my work I asked if I could shoot for them (Rick & DJ KAOS) that night and he said sure. I had the opportunity to photograph Slick Rick once before in South Carolina.
I love the shots that I have of Rick because he is so expressive in his performances. Just look at his body language in these shots. He conveys equal parts of strength and swag. Slick Rick gives me so many things that I can focus my lens on when he performs. He is wearing a truckload of fascinating jewelry that adds so much flavor and fun to each image.
Rick is always interacting with the audience in a very animated way so he gives me a variety of facial expressions to capture. In many cases, Rick will perform with Doug E. Fresh and that gives Rick a chance to sit back and watch Doug work. I got some great shots of Rick while he was sitting on a riser at the back of the stage watching and enjoying Doug E. Fresh’s performance. These guys are awesome. I look forward to our next shoot.
